Downloads data updates for software, drivers, and BIOS from a Lenovo server directly over the Internet without requiring specific user knowledge.
We have close to 40 Lenovo Thinkpads SL410, which all originally came with Windows 7. Even though Lenovo doesn't supply drivers for Windows 10 for the SL410, I still managed to update during the free upgrade period without problems, using the Windows 7 drivers.About installing from scratch, if you already done the upgrade from 7 to 10 before during the 'Free Upgrade' period, you can install it and, once you connect to the internet, it will check and activate your digital license. If you didn't get the free upgrade digital license, then you need to buy one for it.From the Lenovo Support page for the W520, the latest drivers are from2015 for both Windows 7 and 8.1. Update your drivers to the latestversion before upgrading, if you already haven't done.
I found the drivers in the link below. This will almost certainly activate just fine with a clean install of Windows 10. And follow instructions for creating a bootable flash drive. If it does not have a Windows 7 COE sticker with a key in the battery compartment (unlikely if it was manufactured in the past 3 years) then it will just go through the install and activate without any questions. If it does have a sticker, enter it when asked. Either way it will work fine, and yes, the fingerprint sensor will also work. Finish up by installing Lenovo system update, and avoid installing most of the things it suggests, other than BIOS updates and maybe the Lenovo on-screen display that shows what the 'special' function keys are doing.
